Grandma Set Out Two Lawn Chairs for the Sunset. Waffles Had a Better Idea.
Two lawn chairs were set out for the sunset, but only one of them is in use. Grandma Dot sits in a faded blue folding chair in a soft gray cardigan and pink top, curly gray hair lit from behind and glasses catching the last of the light. She gazes toward the glowing horizon with a calm, faraway look. Waffles has skipped the empty chair entirely and parked herself on the grass right beside Dot's armrest, sable coat glowing gold at the edges, nose lifted as if she is sniffing the evening breeze. A wooden fence, pots of pink flowers and a green watering can frame the backyard as the sky turns peach and orange.
Quiet evenings like this are one of the simple pleasures of sharing life with a dog. Many older adults find that a pet gives the day a gentle rhythm, with walks, mealtimes and wind-down moments built in. Sitting outside together offers fresh air and calm companionship, and a dog's presence can make solitude feel less lonely. For dogs, these slow moments matter too. Corgis are people-focused and tend to want to be wherever their family is, even if that just means sitting close and watching the world. In warm months, keep water handy outdoors and check the grass for ticks after evening lounging.
The spare chair can stay empty. Waffles has decided the best seat in the yard is right next to Dot.
