Grandma Dot Pulled Up a Spot on the Porch. Waffles Had the Same Idea.
A good rainstorm turns the porch into the best seat in the house. Grandma Dot sits wrapped in her gray cardigan, curly hair a little windblown, glasses on, gazing out at the downpour with a soft half smile. Waffles sits close beside her, ears up and nose pointed into the damp air, watching the same curtain of rain. Beyond the porch the garden glistens, a patio table stands waiting out the weather, and a woven basket of laundry, a pair of clogs and a bag of apples crowd the boards near the door. Hanging vines drip from the rafters.
Rainy days can be tricky for dogs who love their walks, and a little routine goes a long way. Many dogs enjoy sniffing around a covered porch, which gives them fresh air and new smells without a soggy coat. If your dog does get wet, towel dry the paws and belly so they stay comfortable, and keep an eye on how they act around thunder, since loud storms bother some dogs. A cozy blanket, a chew toy or a short indoor game can fill the time. If storms make your dog very anxious, talk to your vet about ways to help.
Waffles does not seem to mind the weather at all. With Dot beside her and the rain doing its steady drumming, this might be the calmest spot in the whole neighborhood. The whole porch smells of wet earth and fresh air, and it is easy to see why neither of them wants to go inside just yet. Some afternoons are best spent simply watching the sky.
