Grandma Dot Walked Through the Pumpkin Patch. Waffles Only Watched Her.
Pumpkins in every shade of orange cover the ground, but Waffles only has eyes for Grandma Dot. The two have stopped mid stroll in a backyard patch, Dot in a green fleece and jeans, glasses on, smiling down at her dog with obvious affection. Waffles looks right back up at her with her mouth slightly open in a happy pant, ears alert and a dark collar around her neck. Vines sprawl over the dirt, a green pumpkin hides among the orange ones, and a wooden fence and garden tools fill the background in the soft autumn light.
Fall is a fun season for dogs, though pumpkin patches come with a few things to watch. Plain pumpkin is generally fine for dogs in small amounts, but rotting pumpkins can grow mold, and the stems and vines can be tough on a dog's stomach. Keep an eye out for slippery leaves, sharp tools and leftover fertilizer on the ground. Cooler weather is also perfect for longer walks, though shorter legged breeds like corgis can tire sooner than they let on. If you are unsure whether a treat is safe, talk to your vet.
Dot admires the pumpkins and Waffles admires Dot, which seems like a fair trade. It is a very orange, very cozy afternoon. Somewhere in the patch there is probably a perfect pumpkin waiting to be carried home, though nobody seems in a hurry to find it. The cool air and the smell of earth make the afternoon feel like the very heart of fall.
