Grandma Dot Spread Out Her Quilt Scraps. Waffles Claimed Them Immediately.
Some dogs sleep on a bed, and Waffles prefers a quilt in progress. Grandma Dot sits at the table in a gray cardigan and blue shirt, glasses on, stitching a patchwork top with small careful stitches. Right in front of her, Waffles has curled up on the pile of fabric scraps, chin tucked, eyes closed and ears relaxed. Blue floral squares, plaid scraps and soft yellow prints surround her. A wicker basket full of fabric sits behind them, spools of thread and a pair of scissors lie nearby, and a glass of lemon water catches the window light.
Cats are famous for sitting on whatever their person is working on, but many dogs do it too. A pile of fabric smells like their person and feels soft, which makes it an ideal napping spot. Dogs sleep a lot, often between twelve and fourteen hours a day, and they like a cozy spot close to the action. Just keep needles, pins and thread safely out of reach, since swallowed thread can cause serious trouble. If your dog ever eats something like that, call your vet right away.
Dot stitches on while Waffles snores softly. The quilt may end up with a few stray dog hairs, which will make it all the more special. The room is quiet except for the soft tug of thread through fabric, and the afternoon light makes the whole scene glow. Someday the quilt will be done, and it will be very hard to say who helped most.
