Grandma Dot Started Fixing the Fence. Waffles Showed Up With a Stick.

AI imagecorgifence repairbackyard

The fence needs fixing, and Waffles has brought her own supplies. Grandma Dot kneels beside a weathered wooden post in a gray cardigan and dark shirt, glasses on, concentrating as she works a screwdriver into the board. Waffles stands close in front, a long twig clamped in her mouth, ears wide and eyes bright, as if the stick is a vital part of the job. Work gloves, nails and boards lie scattered on the ground, a blue bucket holds tools, and a watering can, boots and potted plants sit along the path behind them.

Sticks are a favorite dog toy, but they are not always safe. Splintered pieces can injure a dog's mouth or throat, and chewing on wood can lead to broken teeth. Many vets suggest a rubber chew toy or a sturdy ball instead. When doing yard repairs, keep nails, screws and sharp tools off the ground where dogs might step on them or pick them up. A quick sweep of the work area afterward is a good habit. If your dog yelps or seems hurt after chewing, talk to your vet.

Dot may be the one with the hammer, but Waffles clearly sees herself as the project manager. The stick stays put, and so does the dog. Somewhere between the gloves, the nails and the stick, the fence will eventually get fixed, and the dog will take part of the credit. It is a small job made much better by good company.
