Grandma Dot Fed the Ducks at Dusk. Waffles Had Brought a Friend.

Dusk has settled over the pond, and the ducks are lining up for dinner. Grandma Dot crouches at the water's edge in her gray cardigan, glasses on, smiling as she sprinkles seed from her fingers. Waffles sits tall beside her with a tan, black and white coat and a calm expression, while a second corgi lies a little lower in the grass, ears alert and gaze fixed on the water. Five mallards paddle toward them, green heads shining. A glowing lamp stands in the background, and the reeds at the bank fade into the warm evening light.

Feeding ducks is a sweet tradition, though what we feed them matters. Bread is not a healthy choice for ducks and can harm their health and the pond, so many parks suggest oats, cracked corn or seed made for waterfowl instead. Keep dogs leashed or under close control near wildlife, since an excited dog may startle the birds or end up in the water. Wash your hands afterward, and rinse your dog's paws if they have been in pond water. If your dog drinks pond water and develops stomach trouble, talk to your vet.

The ducks do not seem bothered by the audience. Dot, Waffles and the other corgi keep their calm and enjoy the end of the day. Little ripples spread across the water each time a duck dips its beak, and the evening feels slow and golden. Nobody is in any hurry to go home, and the ducks seem to agree.
