The Work Was Done and the Field Was Quiet. Abuela Rosa Saved Mango a Seat.

The pickup is parked at the edge of a wide, hazy field, its bed scattered with bits of straw and dust from a day's work. Abuela Rosa has perched on the tailgate in her denim shirt and long flowered apron, hands resting in her lap, smiling down at the cat beside her. Mango sits on the dark bed liner with his tail draped over the edge, chest puffed and eyes calm, looking straight ahead as if he is surveying his territory. Behind them, a little shed is crowded with flowerpots, tools, boots, and folded sacks.

Truck beds and open fields can be exciting places for a cat, but they are full of hazards that are easy to miss. Metal truck surfaces heat up quickly in the sun and can burn sensitive paw pads. Fields may hide hawks, coyotes, farm equipment, and chemicals used on crops. And a cat should never ride in an open truck bed while it is moving. If a cat enjoys spending time outdoors, supervised sessions close to home are the safest choice. Microchipping and an up-to-date ID tag also make a lost cat far more likely to find its way back.

None of that is on Mango's mind right now. The engine is off, the day is winding down, and his favorite person is sitting close enough to touch. Sometimes the best part of a long day is the quiet stretch just before heading in.
