Abuela Rosa Served Herself Breakfast on the Patio. Mango Put a Paw on the Table.

Breakfast has moved outdoors this morning. The patio table holds a plate of fluffy scrambled eggs, half an avocado, a bowl of berries, and a mug of milky coffee, all under a soft overcast sky. Abuela Rosa sits in a cream blouse and her favorite flowered apron, smiling down with real affection. Across from her, Mango has placed one big orange paw squarely on the edge of the table and leaned in, nose aimed at the eggs. Raised garden beds and potted herbs line the fence behind them.

That breakfast plate is a mixed bag for a cat. A small bite of plain, fully cooked egg with nothing added is generally fine as an occasional treat, since eggs are a good source of protein. Avocado is a different story. It contains a substance called persin, and while cats seem less sensitive to it than some animals, the fruit is very rich and the pit is a choking hazard, so it is best skipped. Berries are not toxic but offer little to a meat eater. Keeping treats small and simple, and checking with your vet about anything new, keeps sharing safe.

Mango does not need to know any of that. He just knows the eggs smell wonderful and his person is in a generous mood. If he plays his cards right, a tiny plain morsel might come his way before the coffee goes cold.
