Abuela Rosa Filled the Old Washtub With Bubbles. Chispa Knew What That Meant.
Suds everywhere, a soggy little face, and Abuela Rosa laughing as she works the lather behind Chispa's ears. The old galvanized washtub sits in the middle of the backyard, filled with bubbly water, and the brindle Shih Tzu stands patiently in the middle of it, her long fur plastered flat and her dark eyes peeking out through wet strands. Rosa wears a pink floral apron over a light blue tee, glasses perched on her nose and gray hair pulled back. Around them the yard is alive with potted succulents, herbs, a pair of yellow gardening gloves, and a sun-bleached wooden fence.
Shih Tzus have a long, flowing double coat that needs regular care. Many owners keep their Shih Tzus in a shorter trim to make grooming easier, but even short coats benefit from frequent brushing to prevent mats. Bathing every few weeks with a gentle dog shampoo usually works well, though your vet or groomer can suggest a schedule that fits your dog. Always brush out tangles before a bath, since water can tighten mats. Rinse thoroughly, keep water out of the ears, and dry the coat completely, especially around the face. The breed's facial hair can trap moisture, so wiping around the eyes daily helps keep them clean and comfortable.
Chispa might not love every minute, but she knows what comes next: a warm towel, a good brushing, and a treat from Rosa's apron pocket. That is a deal worth a little soap.
