Chispa Made It All the Way Home. The Porch Steps Were Another Story.
Those short little legs have covered a lot of ground today, and Chispa is done. Abuela Rosa has scooped her up at the foot of the porch steps, cradling the brindle Shih Tzu against her floral apron with one arm under her chest and the other supporting her back legs. Chispa's fur is tousled from the walk, her paws dangle, and her face wears a slightly sheepish expression as Rosa gazes down at her with warm, knowing eyes. The blue-painted porch posts, worn wooden steps, and a potted plant by the door frame the moment, with a sunlit yard stretching behind them.
Carrying a small dog the right way protects both of you. Support the chest with one hand or arm and the hindquarters with the other, keeping the dog's body level and close to yours. Avoid lifting by the front legs or under the armpits alone, which can strain joints. For older adults, it also helps to bend at the knees rather than the back. Shih Tzus have short legs and long backs, so frequent jumping off high furniture or steps can put stress on their bodies over time. Ramps or pet steps can help indoors. And if a dog tires very quickly on walks or seems to struggle, talk to your vet.
Rosa does not mind giving Chispa a ride. After all the miles they have walked together, a little lift up the steps is the least she can do for her favorite walking partner.
