Abuela Rosa Sat Down to Breakfast on the Patio. Chispa Brought Backup.
Scrambled eggs, sliced avocado, a warm tortilla, a bowl of fresh salsa, and a cup of coffee with milk: Abuela Rosa's breakfast on the sunny patio looks wonderful, and she is not the only one who thinks so. Chispa has brought a friend today. One brindle Shih Tzu sits right at the table's edge with paws close to the plate, eyes wide and pleading, while the other leans in from below with a shaggy head tilted toward the food. Rosa, in her floral apron and blue tee, glasses on and hair clipped up, is looking down at the pair with a soft, amused smile. Potted cacti, flowers, and a blue watering can brighten the patio behind them.
Sharing a breakfast table with dogs takes a little know-how. Plain cooked egg in small amounts is generally fine for most dogs, but several items on this plate are not. Onions and garlic, which often go into salsa, can be harmful to dogs, and avocado is best avoided too. Rich or spicy foods can also upset a small dog's stomach. Shih Tzus can be prone to gaining weight, so table scraps add up quickly. A better approach is to keep a few dog-safe treats nearby and reward calm sitting away from the table. If a dog does gobble something questionable, talk to your vet.
Rosa will not give in to those faces, at least not much. A tiny bite of plain egg each, maybe. The rest of the breakfast is hers, and the two hopefuls will have to settle for good company.
