Grandpa Gus Said He'd Rest His Eyes for Five Minutes on the Lawn

The grass is warm, the late sun is low, and Grandpa Gus has decided the lawn is the best bed in the neighborhood. He lies on his side in his green fishing vest and plaid shirt, white mustache relaxed, eyes closed. Waffles is stretched out right against him, chin on Gus's plaid sleeve, one front paw dangling in the air. The fawn French Bulldog's wrinkled face is smushed in perfect peace. A few fallen leaves dot the grass around them, and the gray house and a leafy hedge sit quietly in the background, as if the entire yard were holding its breath.

Frenchies are famous for sleeping often and deeply, and they love warmth. Even so, they are a flat-faced breed that can overheat quickly, so a sunny nap should be short, with shade and fresh water nearby. Early evening, when the sun is gentle, is much safer than midday. Watch for heavy panting, drooling, or a dog who seems reluctant to move, and get him somewhere cool at once. If your dog snores, snorts, or breathes noisily in his sleep, that is often normal for the breed, but talk to your vet if the breathing seems labored. A blanket on the lawn can also help keep a short-coated dog comfortable.

Gus and Waffles might wake up with grass in their hair and nothing else on the schedule. Some of the best afternoons are the ones where two old friends simply lie down together and let the world carry on without them.
