Grandpa Gus Poured Some Lemonade. Waffles Pulled Up a Spot Right Beside Him.
Shade on the porch, a tall glass of lemonade, and one very interested Frenchie. Grandpa Gus sits in his green fishing vest, white mustache neat, looking down at the drink in his hand as ice cubes and lemon slices bob in the glass. Waffles has wedged himself right beside Gus's knee, his big bat ears tilted and his wrinkled fawn face turned up. His soulful eyes say that he has a few thoughts on the matter. Behind them the porch rail is lined with flower pots, a green watering can rests on the steps, and sunlight dapples the boards.
On hot days it is tempting to share a cold drink, but human beverages are not made for dogs. Lemonade has a lot of sugar, and citrus oils and peels can upset a dog's stomach, so it is best kept to your own glass. The healthiest thing to offer is cool, fresh water in a bowl that stays in the shade. For a special treat, a few ice cubes or a frozen dog-safe snack can be fun. French Bulldogs overheat more easily than many breeds because of their short noses, so keep porch visits shaded and watch for heavy panting. If you have any worries about heat or diet, your vet can help.
Gus will probably end up fetching his dog a bowl of water, because that is how these stories always go. Waffles takes the water with dignity, and they both settle in to watch the afternoon go by.
