Grandpa Gus Started Humming in the Kitchen. Waffles Could Not Hold Still.

There is no music that anyone else can hear, but Grandpa Gus is swaying anyway. He stands in the middle of his kitchen with his eyes closed, a gentle smile on his face, his white mustache lifted and one hand resting in the air as if he is leading a partner. Beside him Waffles has planted his front paws wide and his big pink tongue out in a happy pant. The fawn French Bulldog's tail is a blur behind him, and his dark eyes are bright with joy. Sunlight pours through the window over the counter, which is lined with jars, a blue dish towel, a bowl of fruit, and wooden shelves.

Frenchies are known for wiggly, happy greetings, and a wagging tail is one of the clearest ways a dog tells you he is having a good time. Their short stub or screw tails do not always swing like those of other breeds, but the whole back end can wiggle with excitement. Kitchen floors can be slippery for short legs, so a rug or a non-slip mat protects his joints during play. Gentle movement is good for both people and dogs, and a quick dance together makes a nice break in the day. Keep play calm in warm rooms, since flat-faced dogs tire quickly. Ask your vet about exercise that suits your dog.

Gus opens his eyes and laughs. Waffles keeps wagging, and the song, real or imagined, plays on for a while longer.
