Earl Sat Down to Whittle on the Porch. The Wood Shavings Got an Audience.
Curl after curl of pale wood peels away from Earl's little knife and tumbles onto the porch boards, collecting in a drift of shavings by his boots. He works slowly and carefully, head bowed, completely absorbed in the shape that is beginning to appear. Custard has parked herself at the edge of the table, chin just above the mess, eyes wide with interest at every falling ribbon of wood. A watering can sits on the steps behind them, potted plants line the deck, and the backyard fence glows in soft afternoon light.
Hobbies that keep the hands busy, like whittling, knitting, or woodworking, are a popular way for older adults to stay engaged. They give a sense of purpose, a project to look forward to, and a reason to sit outside on a nice day. A pet nearby adds gentle company without demanding conversation. If your cat likes to watch you craft, a little caution goes a long way. Keep sharp tools out of reach when you step away, sweep up small pieces that could be chewed or swallowed, and never leave stain, varnish, or glue where curious paws can find them. A crinkly wood curl might look like the perfect toy, but a proper cat toy is the safer choice.
Whatever Earl is carving, it already has its first admirer. Custard may not know what it will become, but she is not about to miss the reveal.
