Otis Wrapped His Hands Around a Warm Mug. Then Mocha Climbed Up.
Dusk has settled over the front steps, and a warm lantern glows beside the door. Otis sits in his olive cardigan with a steaming white mug held close to his chin, his eyes closed and his face soft with satisfaction. Across his lap lies Mocha, a creamy, fluffy weight with her white front paw dangling over his knee and her blue eyes looking out toward the street. Her tail curls under his arm. A potted spiky plant and a doormat sit by the doorway behind them, and the neighborhood beyond has gone blue and quiet.
Many people find that a cat in the lap makes a calm start or end to the day. Petting a purring cat is a relaxing activity, and the quiet routine of a hot drink on the porch gives both of them time to unwind. If you share a lap with a cat, keep hot drinks well away from her paws and tail, since a sudden jump can spill scalding liquid on both of you. A mug with a lid, or a table within reach, is a simple fix. Cats also love being up high and near warmth, so a lap fits her wishes perfectly. Early morning and dusk are the hours when many cats are most active and affectionate.
Mocha looks as if she plans to stay put until the mug is empty and then some. Otis is in no hurry to move her, and the evening seems to be in no hurry either.
