Grandpa Ken Had a Whole Driveway to Shovel. Shadow Found a Better Use for the Snow.
Fresh snow means two very different jobs in this driveway. Grandpa Ken grips his shovel with gloved hands, bundled in a dark jacket with his knit vest layered on top, carefully pushing the heavy white stuff aside. Shadow has decided her job is testing the snowbank. She lies right in the thick of it, front paws stretched out, black coat dotted with white flakes, mouth open in a pleased little grin. Boots wait by the door, a trash bin stands at the curb, and snow blankets the bushes and rooftops all around.
German Shepherds have a dense double coat that handles cold weather well, which is why many of them seem to love the snow. Still, winter brings a few things to watch. Ice-melt salt and chemicals can irritate paw pads and should be wiped off after walks, and antifreeze is very dangerous if licked, so clean up any drips in the garage. Snow can also ball up between toes. For older people, shoveling is genuinely strenuous work, so taking breaks, pushing rather than lifting, and asking for help with heavy snow are all sensible choices.
Ken is doing the hard part, and Shadow is doing the fun part, which seems like a fair split to at least one of them. When the driveway is clear, a warm kitchen and a towel for one snowy dog will surely be waiting.
