Grandpa Ken Finally Harvested His Pumpkins. Shadow Thought It Was All for Her.
Autumn has arrived in full orange. Grandpa Ken stands in his front garden among a scattered harvest of pumpkins, grinning through his glasses, gray sweater vest buttoned over a soft blue shirt. Shadow stands in front of him, mouth open in a cheerful pant, warm tan markings showing on her legs and her ears perked toward the camera. Dry vines curl across the ground, fallen leaves gather in the corners, a blue watering can and a rake lean nearby, and a cardboard box sits ready for the best picks.
Fall gardens are wonderful for dogs to explore, but a few things are worth knowing. Plain cooked pumpkin is often fine for dogs in small amounts, though large chunks of raw rind and stems are tough to digest. Carved jack-o'-lanterns that have started to rot can grow mold, so it is best to toss them before a curious dog takes a bite. Garden fertilizers and some mulches can also be harmful if eaten. Keeping the harvest area tidy and supervising sniffing sessions lets everyone enjoy the season safely, especially with a large, nosy breed like a German Shepherd.
It looks like a very good haul this year. Ken has a garden full of pumpkins, and Shadow has a garden full of brand-new smells. Both of them seem completely satisfied with their share.
