Every Night Grandpa Ken Does the Same Thing Before Bed. Shadow Waits for It.
Bedtime has its rituals, and this one involves a blanket. Grandpa Ken bends over a round gray dog bed, gently tucking a soft knit throw around Shadow's shoulders like he has done it a hundred times before. His tan sweater vest and blue plaid shirt glow in the warm lamplight, and his face is calm and focused. Shadow lies curled in the bed with her ears up and her eyes on him, completely at ease. Nearby, a little table holds a cup of tea, a stack of books, framed family photos, and a basket of tennis balls.
A comfortable sleep spot matters for dogs of every age, but especially for large breeds. German Shepherds can be prone to joint issues as they get older, so many owners choose a supportive, padded bed that keeps them off cold, hard floors. Placing it in a quiet, draft-free corner helps too. Some dogs love a blanket, while others prefer to stay cool, so it is worth watching what your dog chooses on their own. If you notice stiffness when your dog gets up or reluctance to lie down, that is a good reason to talk to your vet.
Shadow looks perfectly content to be fussed over. Ken might sit up a little longer with his tea, but his best friend is already snug, settled, and ready to dream about tomorrow's walk.
