Grandma Nell Opened the Paper. Bluebell Opened Her Own Plans.
Grandma Nell holds the newspaper in both hands, her eyes lowered to the page and a thoughtful smile on her lips. Spread across her lap is Bluebell, fast asleep with her face turned to one side, her paws folded in and her long tail draped along Nell's leg. The soft paper edge rests just on the cat's back. A cup and a plant sit by the window behind them, and the room is quiet and bright. Now and then a page rustles, and one ear twitches in her sleep, but nothing about the scene looks ready to change anytime soon.
Cats have a famous habit of choosing exactly the spot you are using: the keyboard, the book, the paper. They may like the warmth, the crinkle, or simply the attention. A cat who settles on your lap is also showing trust. If you need to move, lift her gently with support under her chest and hindquarters, rather than letting her dangle. Ragdolls are known for being relaxed about being held, but each cat has her own limits. A small rotation of soft spots around the house helps give your cat options, and your vet can help if sleep habits change.
There are worse ways to catch up on the news than with a warm, heavy cat. Nell will get to the crossword eventually. For now, Bluebell is the only headline that matters.
