Grandpa Gus Unrolled His Yoga Mat. Pudding Had Strong Opinions About It.
On a gray yoga mat in the living room, Grandpa Gus sits cross-legged with his palms pressed together, eyes lowered and his plaid shirt loose over a gray tee. Across the mat from him, Pudding lies stretched out with his paws forward and his chin up, a few strands of cream fur drifting onto the rug. A wooden dresser, a framed mountain picture and a stack of folded blankets fill the room behind. The mat is the only tidy thing in the room, and the cat has already left a few cream hairs across it as a signature.
Cats are natural stretchers, and a yoga mat can seem like an invitation. Their long reaching stretches, especially the one that looks like a downward-facing pose, are part of how they loosen up after rest. Gentle stretching can be a nice part of an older adult's day, and doing it with a pet nearby is a calming shared routine. Of course, check with your doctor about what is right for you. Keep the mat uncluttered, and watch for claws if your cat wants to knead it. A clean, soft space makes the session pleasant for both of you.
The two of them look a lot alike in this moment: quiet, centered and in no hurry. Gus breathes in. Pudding, who invented the pose long ago, quietly judges his form.
