Grandpa Gus Strolled Through the Market With Pudding in His Arms
Behind them stretch rows of tables piled with tomatoes, cucumbers, greens, peaches and sunflowers in jars. Grandpa Gus stands holding Pudding in both arms with a wide, happy smile, his gaze turned upward at something off to the side. Pudding sits calmly against his chest, looking out with wide eyes and a slightly wary expression, long cream fur fluffing around Gus's elbows. A tote bag leans against a table, and the day is bright and warm. Baskets of peaches sit beside crates of corn, and a vendor in the distance seems to be smiling in their direction. The cat's tail swings once, slowly, like a small flag signaling that the outing is acceptable but must not last too long.
A Persian is not usually an adventurer, and a crowded market can feel like a lot for a cat who loves quiet. If you want to bring a cat along, think about a secure carrier or harness rather than relying on your arms, since a startled cat can leap away fast. Hot pavements and warm days are a concern for flat-faced breeds, which can overheat easily, so bring water and keep trips short. Keep him away from raw meat, fish and food scraps, and ask your vet if you are unsure about outings.
Whatever the crowd thinks, Gus is proud of his companion. Pudding is composed and a little unimpressed. It is the kind of walk that earns a nap afterward.
