Ruth and Harold Spent All Afternoon on the Quilt. Miso Found a Better Use for It.

Needles go in and out, thread spools roll across the table, and right in the middle of the project lies the one family member who is not working at all. Ruth, in a green cardigan with her gray hair loosely gathered, bends close over a blue patch with her needle, while Harold, in a plaid flannel shirt and glasses, carefully stitches a seam of his own. Squares of denim blue, butter yellow and faded floral prints spill everywhere. Miso has claimed the softest corner, curled on a heap of fabric with his eyes shut, his dark paws tucked and his tail draped over the edge like a forgotten ribbon.

Quilting is a craft that rewards patience, and it suits many older adults well. The repetitive stitching can feel calming, planning colors keeps the mind engaged, and the finished piece often becomes a keepsake that carries family memories. Working with pets around does call for a little care. Cats are drawn to loose thread, yarn and string, and swallowing it can cause serious intestinal problems that need a vet's attention. Pins and needles are another hazard, so a magnetic pin dish and a habit of tidying up before leaving the table go a long way.

Miso does not seem worried about any of that. To him the quilt is already finished and it makes a perfectly good bed. Ruth and Harold will just have to stitch around him for a while.
