Dottie Took Her Coffee Out to the Steps. Marigold Kept Her Company.
The mug is warm in both hands and Dottie holds it close, looking down with a sleepy, gentle smile. Her silver braid trails over a faded denim shirt, and the porch steps around her are cheerfully cluttered: a blue watering can, work boots, gardening gloves and potted plants. Marigold sits close beside her, calico fur in strong stripes of orange, black and white, one ear tilted and her eyes on something in the yard. The air looks cool and fresh, the way early mornings do.
A quiet morning routine can set a pleasant tone for the whole day, and a pet nearby often becomes part of it. Cats thrive on predictable schedules, so regular times for meals and play help them feel secure. If you drink coffee or tea where your cat can reach, remember that caffeine is harmful to pets, so keep cups covered or out of reach, and don't let her lap up anything from your mug. Fresh water in her own bowl is always the best choice. If you ever worry that she has sipped something she shouldn't have, call your vet.
Marigold has her own morning agenda, which seems to consist of sitting very close and watching the yard. The coffee will cool and the sun will rise. Neither of them seems the slightest bit hurried.
