The Rain Came Down Hard. Dottie and Marigold Didn't Move an Inch.

Rain sweeps over the garden in soft gray sheets while Dottie sits on a covered porch with her hands in her lap and her eyes on the weather. Her silver braid hangs over a denim shirt, and her face is calm. Marigold sits beside her facing the same direction, calico coat glowing against the muted green behind them, ears forward as the drops fall. The porch is full of cheerful clutter: a watering can, rubber boots, a stack of firewood, a rake and a basket of gloves.

Rainy days can be an excellent time for quiet bonding. Many cats love to watch the rain from a safe, dry spot, and the sound and smell of a storm can be endlessly interesting. Some cats do get nervous during thunderstorms, though, so having a quiet hideaway, a soft blanket and a calm human nearby can help. Make sure she can't slip out into the wet, since a frightened cat may bolt, and keep an up-to-date ID tag and microchip on file. If storms make her very anxious, your vet can suggest ways to help her feel calmer.

For now, Marigold is perfectly content. She is warm, dry and close to her favorite person, with nothing to do but watch the water fall. Dottie seems to feel the same. The rain can take as long as it likes.
