Earl Was Stitching a Quilt. Maple Decided the Scraps Were Her Bed.

AI imagered shiba inuquiltingfabric scraps

Fabric covers the floor in a happy tide of patterns: blues, florals, creams and browns, spilling from baskets and piled on the couch. Earl sits near a basket with a half-finished quilt across his lap, needle and thread in his fingers and glasses on, his green cardigan buttoned neatly. In the middle of it all, Maple the red Shiba Inu is curled in a tight rust-red circle on the scraps, her nose tucked toward her tail and her eyes shut in deep sleep. A sofa with pillows, shelves of folded fabric and a pair of glasses on the arm fill the room.

Quilting is a patient craft that rewards a steady hand, and many people enjoy the way scraps become a keepsake. When a dog shares the space, a bit of caution helps. Needles, pins, thread and tiny buttons can hurt a dog who swallows them or steps on them, so keep a pin cushion and a small tray for supplies, and pick up stray thread. Some dyes and treated fabrics may also upset sensitive stomachs if chewed. Shibas often love a soft nest to curl up in, so a dog bed beside the sewing spot gives her somewhere comfy that isn't the quilt.

Maple has not read the instructions. In her view, the quilt is a bed, and a very good one. Earl simply works around her, stitching one more square into place.
