Earl Pulled Up a Chair to Watch the Sun Go Down. Maple Watched Too.

The sun is sinking behind the fence, painting the sky with soft orange, and Earl sits back in a green folding chair with his hands relaxed in his lap. His cardigan is a rich olive knit and his glasses catch a bit of light as he gazes out. Maple the red Shiba Inu sits in the grass at his feet, tall and still, her black nose pointed forward and her eyes fixed on the horizon. A second empty chair stands nearby, waiting, with a leafy yard behind it.

Evenings outdoors offer a calm way to wind down, and a dog at your feet adds to it. Shiba Inus can be quite independent, so a dog who chooses to sit near you is expressing a genuine bond. Spend time outdoors at dusk with care: make sure your yard is securely fenced, since twilight movement can tempt a Shiba to chase, and a visible collar with an ID tag is always wise. Evenings can also cool quickly, so a blanket for you and a warm spot for her make it comfortable. Your vet can advise if she tends to get restless after dark.

Neither of them speaks. They don't need to. The sky does the talking, and the day settles down for the night. Tomorrow the sun will do it all over again, and they will probably be there for that one too. For now, the fence line glows and the grass is cool.
