Earl Nodded Off in His Recliner. Maple Stayed Wide Awake on the Armrest.

AI imagered shiba inurecliner napgrandpa

Earl has drifted off in a plush brown recliner, his glasses still on and his chin tipped down, a green cardigan wrapped around his shoulders. On the armrest beside him, Maple the red Shiba Inu is stretched out with her front paws dangling over the edge, her dark eyes wide open and calmly on duty. A television sits dark in the background, and the side table is cluttered with books, a mug, a tissue box and a blanket. The afternoon light falls in through sheer curtains.

Shiba Inus are often described as alert, watchful dogs, and many like to keep an eye on the household even while they rest. Dogs sleep much of the day, and a pet who lies close to a napping owner is a common sight. A recliner is a comfortable spot, but if your dog likes to climb, jumping on and off furniture can be hard on her joints, especially as she ages, so a ramp or step can help. Make sure small items like pills, remote controls and tissues on side tables are out of her reach, and check with your vet if you have questions.

Maple is clearly on guard. A passing squirrel would find her ready, and a creak of the door would bring her ears up. Earl sleeps on, safe in the knowledge that he is watched over.
