Earl Lay Down in the Hammock for a Minute. Maple Climbed Right In.
Oak leaves rustle overhead as Earl dozes in a rope hammock, his head resting on one arm and his olive cardigan bunched around him. Curled against his side is Maple the red Shiba Inu, her eyes closed, her nose tucked toward her paws and her rust-red coat rising and falling with sleepy breaths. The hammock sags gently beneath their weight, and a wooden fence, potted plants and a house wall are blurred in the afternoon light behind them. Even the leaves overhead look still.
A breezy nap in a shady yard is hard to beat, and sharing it with a dog is a sweet touch. If you try this at home, keep a few things in mind: hammocks can tip, and a dog jumping in or out could cause a tumble, so make sure yours is sturdy and low to the ground. Provide fresh water, since dogs can get thirsty after a snooze outside, and watch the temperature, because Shibas have a thick double coat and can overheat easily in the sun. A shady spot and a breeze are ideal. Check for ticks after time in the yard, and ask your vet about prevention.
Both sleepers look utterly relaxed. There are no chores, no calls, only the soft rocking of the ropes. They will wake up eventually, and probably not any time soon.
