Earl Watered His Flower Box. Maple Watched Each Drop Like a Gardener.

Light pours through the window as Earl crouches by a wooden planter box, tipping an old metal watering can over a tangle of pink and purple blooms and a little succulent. His glasses sit low on his nose and his green cardigan has creases at the elbows. Maple the red Shiba Inu stands close behind, her head level with the planter, her leather collar neat around her neck and her dark eyes on the falling water. Potted plants fill the shelves behind them and a cozy throw hangs on the nearby chair.

Houseplants and flower boxes make a home feel cheerful, but they are worth checking against what dogs can safely be around. Several common plants, including lilies, sago palms and some ivy varieties, are poisonous to pets, and fertilizers and potting soil can upset a dog who nibbles. Before bringing a new plant home, look it up on a pet-safe plant list, and keep watering and fertilizing supplies out of reach. Shiba Inus are curious and clever, so a planter at nose height can be tempting. If she chews on a plant you aren't sure about, call your vet.

Maple watches the droplets fall and the soil darken with the focus of a gardening apprentice. Earl pours slowly, taking his time. The flowers will be bright by the end of the week.
