Grandpa Otis Started the Old Truck. Bruno Looked Very Serious About It.
Behind the wheel of an old pickup with a cracked leather bench seat, Grandpa Otis wears a tan cardigan and a seat belt across his chest, glasses on and a small, content smile. In the passenger seat Bruno sits tall, brindle face turned toward the camera with a slightly worried, wide-eyed look, his blue collar snug and the gear shift knob beside him. Through the windshield you can see a quiet driveway, a porch with potted plants, a blue watering can, and a mailbox on a post. The truck smells, one imagines, of coffee and dog and years of Saturday errands.
Car rides are a favorite for many dogs, but safety matters. A dog should not roam loose in a vehicle, and many vets recommend a crash-tested harness or a secured carrier rather than letting a dog sit freely on the seat. Keep a dog off a lap and away from the driver's controls, and never leave him alone in a parked vehicle, especially on a warm day, since cars heat up quickly and French Bulldogs overheat easily. Bring water for longer trips, take breaks, and keep windows cracked only to a safe level. If your dog gets anxious or carsick, talk to your vet.
Bruno looks a little serious about his job as copilot. Otis, steady at the wheel, looks like he has all the time in the world.
