Grandpa Otis Shoveled the Driveway. Bruno Decided Snow Was Just Fun.

Snow is falling softly over the neighborhood as Grandpa Otis works his shovel along the driveway, bundled in a tan cardigan, a dark green knit hat, and his round glasses. Frost clings to his white beard, and he is grinning at the sight in front of him. Bruno has launched himself into a big drift, his brindle chest pushing through the powder with his ears flopped sideways and a pink tongue just visible. Fences, bare trees, and the roofs of nearby houses fade into the pale grey sky. Snow clings to Bruno's whiskers, and he looks thrilled with every step.

Winter play is great fun for dogs, but short-nosed breeds like French Bulldogs have a low tolerance for cold. Their short coats offer little insulation, so a snug dog coat helps, and outdoor time should be brief. Check paws for ice balls between the toes, and wipe them afterward to remove road salt and de-icing chemicals, which can irritate skin and are harmful if licked. Keep dogs away from antifreeze, which is highly toxic. Watch for shivering or lifting paws, and bring him in when he has had enough. A warm towel and a dry bed are the perfect finish. Bundled-up grandpas are also advised to take breaks while shoveling.

The driveway will be cleared eventually. For now, the best part of the winter morning is a happy dog bouncing through the snow.
