Grandpa Otis Was Fixing the Fence. Two Helpers Showed Up With Supplies.

Hammer raised and glasses on, Grandpa Otis is crouched by the backyard fence, tapping a nail into a weathered board. His green cable-knit cardigan is pushed up at the wrists, and a blue watering can, work gloves, and a toolbox of scrap wood sit at his feet. He's got not one but two eager helpers. Bruno, his brindle French Bulldog, is planted right beside him with a long stick clamped proudly in his mouth. Just behind, a shaggy golden dog has brought a stick of his own, ears perked and eyes bright. Together they look like a two-dog supply crew ready to deliver building materials.

Dogs carrying sticks is adorable, but sticks themselves can be risky. They can splinter and cause mouth injuries or get lodged in the throat, especially during enthusiastic chewing or fetch. Sturdy rubber toys made for fetching are a safer swap. When two dogs play together, it's helpful to watch for signs both are enjoying themselves, such as loose bodies, play bows, and taking turns. If one dog is guarding a stick or toy, giving each dog their own and stepping in calmly can head off squabbles. Home projects also mean nails and tools, so keep those up and away from curious paws.

The fence gets fixed, the dogs feel very important, and the whole yard hums with good company. Otis may be doing the hammering, but his crew is clearly convinced the job couldn't be done without them.
