An older man in a fishing vest and a gray Russian Blue cat watch heavy rain from a covered wooden porch. 8 / 37

Earl Pulled Up a Porch Seat for the Storm. Pewter Was Already Watching.

Rain is coming down in sheets beyond the porch roof, bending the leaves and drumming on the boards, and Earl has decided the best response is to sit still and watch. He wears his olive fishing vest over a blue plaid shirt, his white mustache catching the gray light, and his gaze is fixed somewhere out in the wet green yard. Pewter sits right against his arm, her yellow-green eyes turned the same direction, ears forward, as if she is following every drop. A few potted plants soak it all up beside them.

Plenty of cats are fascinated by rain, and it makes sense. Moving water, new sounds, and the fresh smells that rise from wet ground give an indoor cat a lot to take in from a safe, dry spot. A covered porch or a screened window is a nice way to offer that kind of enrichment without any risk. Russian Blues in particular are known for being quiet, observant, and strongly bonded to their people, so a calm companion beside the chair is just their style. If a cat is startled by thunder, give her a cozy hiding place and a familiar blanket rather than trying to coax her out. Cats also like routines, so a regular spot for watching the weather can become a favorite part of the day. If a cat seems unusually anxious during storms, talk to your vet about ways to help.

Earl says rainy afternoons are for doing nothing in good company. Pewter, by the look of her, has no objections.
