Earl Settled by the Fire Under a Quilt. Pewter Found the Best Spot.
The fire is crackling low and orange, a table lamp glows in the corner, and Earl has bundled himself up in a patchwork quilt of blues and creams. He still has his fishing vest on underneath, which suggests he sat down for just a minute and never got up again. Pewter curls against his chest on top of the quilt, her gray fur nearly matching the faded squares, her green eyes steady and sleepy. Books are stacked on a shelf behind them, and the whole room feels warm and unhurried.
Cats are famous for finding the warmest spot in a house, and a fireplace is hard to beat. Their comfortable resting temperature runs higher than ours, which is part of why they love sunbeams, laps, and heaters. If you share an evening like this with a cat, it is smart to use a sturdy screen so sparks cannot fly out, and to keep a curious cat from getting too close to the hearth. Cats can also curl up near heat sources more than is safe for them, so give her a soft bed a little further back and let her choose. Russian Blues are generally gentle and affectionate with their families, and many enjoy a lap as long as it is calm and quiet. If your cat suddenly seems to seek out warmth much more than usual, mention it to your vet.
Outside, the evening is cold and the night is long. In here, Earl and Pewter have everything they need.
