Earl Set Out a Sunny Breakfast. Pewter Pulled Up a Very Close Seat.

Sunshine pours across the patio, and breakfast is laid out on a plate: scrambled eggs, a slice of golden toast, a few blueberries, and a mug of something hot. Earl is smiling down at his guest with crinkled eyes. Pewter has climbed up so her front paws rest on the table edge, her nose lifted toward the plate and her pale green eyes locked on his face. Behind them are potted herbs, a plaid blanket tossed over a chair, and a basket of yarn waiting for later.

Cats are great at begging with their eyes, and a breakfast table is prime territory. It is tempting to share, but many human foods are not good for cats. Eggs cooked plain are sometimes given as a small treat, but butter, salt, onions, garlic, and seasonings are best avoided, and it is wise to check with your vet before offering anything new. Keep the table for people, and teach a cat to wait on her own perch with a treat made for cats. A little routine goes a long way, and cats usually settle quickly when they learn that their own breakfast arrives right on schedule. Russian Blues are known for being polite and watchful, and they often prefer to watch quietly rather than demand a bite. Fresh water nearby is always welcome too.

Earl says a good breakfast is better with company. Pewter agrees, as long as she gets to supervise.
