Grandpa Ken Opened a Book and Started a Very Small Story Hour
Reading time has begun on the gray couch, and the audience is paying full attention. Grandpa Ken holds an open book in one hand, glasses balanced on his nose, mouth caught mid-word as he reads in what must be his best storytelling voice. Mochi sits close with his big dark eyes fixed upward and his black ears folded back, wrinkled forehead tilted just a little. A knitted blanket drapes over the arm of the couch, and in the soft window light behind them there is a lamp, a glass of water and a remote control.
Dogs may not follow the plot, but they do respond to a familiar, soothing voice, and many seem to enjoy it. Reading aloud gives a dog calm attention and a predictable routine, which can help a nervous or excitable pet settle. It is also good for the reader, since speaking aloud and keeping a steady rhythm can be pleasant mental exercise. Choose a quiet time when your dog is relaxed, keep your tone warm and even, and let your dog leave the room if they prefer. Pugs are people-loving dogs that like being near their family, so a story on the couch suits them well. Offer a short break and a drink of water if the chapter runs long.
If Mochi had to review the book, he would probably give it five stars based on the voice alone. The next chapter can wait until the couch gets even cozier.
