Grandpa Ken Made Sure Mochi Was Tucked In Just Right Before Bed

It is bedtime in the living room, and Grandpa Ken is making sure it is done right. Leaning over a big gray dog bed, he folds a soft cream blanket over Mochi's side with both hands, his dark green sweater and wire glasses bent toward the sleepy Pug. Mochi is curled into a round little bun with his eyes half shut, one black ear flopped over his face and his curly tail tucked beside him. In the room behind them, a worn couch with a throw, a basket of yarn, a mug and stacks of books wait for a quiet evening.

A good dog bed matters more than many people think. Dogs sleep many hours a day, and a bed that is the right size, with soft support, helps joints and gives them a secure place that is theirs. Place it away from drafts and busy doorways, and wash the cover regularly. A light blanket can add comfort, but make sure your dog can easily move out from under it, and avoid fuzzy fabrics with loose threads that could be chewed. Pugs do not tolerate heat well, so a room that is too warm or too many layers may bother them. Keeping bedtime at about the same time each night helps dogs settle, and a calm goodnight routine makes it even easier.

Goodnight, Mochi. The blanket is tucked, the lamp is low, and Grandpa Ken will probably check on him one more time before he heads upstairs.
