Grandpa Ken Put Down the Fishing Rod to Tell Mochi a Secret
A pond waits behind them, a fishing rod rests on the boards, and Grandpa Ken has put the whole afternoon on hold for a quick word with his friend. He leans toward Mochi with a warm half smile, tan sweater and plaid collar soft in the gray light. Mochi sits tall on the old wooden dock in his brown leather collar, looking up into Grandpa Ken's face with an expression that seems to say he understood every word. Beyond the dock, there is a weathered fence, a few pots of plants, and a quiet stretch of reeds in the water.
A fishing trip with a dog is a nice way to spend time outdoors, with some safety planning. Keep hooks, lures and line out of reach, because a swallowed hook or tangled line can be a serious emergency for a pet. Dock boards can be slippery, and Pugs are not good swimmers, so a snug canine life jacket is a smart precaution near deep water. Bring fresh drinking water, since pond water can carry germs or algae, and offer shade on sunny days because flat-faced dogs can overheat easily. Keep your dog on a leash or in a harness so a sudden splash or a scampering duck does not become a problem. Then settle in and enjoy the quiet.
The fish can wait. Grandpa Ken and Mochi have more important things to talk about, and both of them seem to be listening.
