Grandpa Ken Fed the Chickens. Mochi Followed Along Like a Farm Inspector.

Evening light hangs over the backyard coop, string lights glowing in the background, as Grandpa Ken lets a handful of golden grain trickle through his fingers. Three speckled and reddish hens crowd around his feet, pecking busily at the ground. Mochi stands a little behind them, wearing a blue collar, head tilted and ears forward, taking the whole scene in with great interest. Rubber boots, a blue bucket, flowerpots and an old gray towel add to the cheerful clutter around the small wooden hen house.

If you keep chickens and a dog, a little planning helps everyone get along. Some dogs see hens as something to chase, so introduce them slowly, keep your dog on a leash at first, and reward calm behavior. Pugs are generally friendly and not strong hunters, but every dog is an individual, so supervise closely. Keep chicken feed stored out of reach, because dogs can eat it, and wash your hands after handling birds or eggs, since chickens can carry germs. Make sure the coop is secure at night. Feeding chickens is a pleasant daily chore that many people find relaxing, and having a curious dog trot along makes it even more fun.

Mochi has not decided yet whether the hens are friends or just very noisy neighbors. For now he is happy to watch Grandpa Ken do the feeding.
