Grandma Odessa Played Her Favorite Tune. Copper Sat Down Like the Guest of Honor.
An old wooden upright piano fills the left side of the frame, its ivory keys a little worn and the case glowing warm brown. Grandma Odessa sits at it in a green cardigan and glasses, silver hair soft in the lamplight, hands moving across the keys with relaxed attention. Copper sits upright on the end of the bench beside her, long red-gold coat gleaming, ears hanging and eyes turned toward the room as if he is the proper concert host. In the cozy room behind them, an armchair draped with a cream blanket, a mug on a side table, stacks of paper bags and framed photos can be seen.
Golden Retrievers were bred to work closely with people, so they often like to be right where the action is, even at a piano. For dogs, piano sound can be pleasant or loud, depending on the dog, so watch their reaction. If your dog looks stressed, with ears back, yawning, pacing or leaving the room, give them a quieter spot. A comfortable mat near the piano gives them a place to rest and stay put, and a few treats can teach them to settle there. A bench is not a safe place for a large dog to jump on and off from, so help them down carefully. Music can be soothing for many people.
Copper may be a big dog, but he sits like a gentleman. Grandma Odessa plays on, and the whole room hums along.
