Grandma Nell Washed the Sedan. Waffles Joined the Water Fight.
Water arcs across the driveway in a bright ribbon, and Waffles is right in the middle of it, one front paw lifted and his mouth open in an excited grin. His red, white and black coat is soaked and his ears swing as he tracks the spray. Grandma Nell leans over the side of the silver sedan with a yellow sponge in hand and a soft, amused smile, her curly gray hair and glasses framed against the garage door behind her. A blue bucket, a green watering can and a few potted plants sit by the side of the driveway in the warm evening light.
A hose can be a hit with a Beagle, who often loves a game of chasing a moving target, but a few cautions help keep it safe. Keep the spray gentle and avoid the face, since strong water can sting the eyes and ears. Check that hose water is not hot from sitting in the sun. Car washing supplies can be dangerous for dogs, especially soaps, waxes and antifreeze, which is sweet-smelling and toxic, so keep buckets and bottles out of reach. Beagles are food- and scent-driven, so watch that your dog does not drink dirty runoff from the driveway. Afterward, dry the ears well with a towel, since damp ears can be uncomfortable.
The sedan will get clean, eventually. Waffles will be clean too, whether he likes it or not, and Grandma Nell is laughing too hard to mind.
