Harold Pointed the Hose at the Car. Toffee Thought It Was Aimed at Him.
Soap, a sponge and a garden hose are all it takes to start a party. Harold holds the hose, sending a bright arc of water along the side of the old gray car, while Bev wipes the door with a yellow sponge and a smile. Toffee is right in the splash zone, one paw lifted and his orange body mid-pounce as the stream sparkles in front of him. The driveway shines with water, and a porch lamp glows behind them in the evening light. Harold's wet shoes and Bev's rolled sleeves show they are fully committed to the job, and Toffee is fully committed to the water.
Plenty of cats are fascinated by moving water even if they hate being wet. Chasing a hose spray taps into the same hunting instincts as chasing a toy, but a soaked cat can get cold and stressed, and some products for washing cars are toxic if licked. Soap, antifreeze and other car fluids are especially dangerous because they can be sweet-smelling to pets, so wipe up spills and keep them away from where your cat plays. If your cat does get wet, dry him with a warm towel and a quiet spot indoors. If he gets into any chemicals, call your vet promptly.
Toffee will probably not admit he enjoyed the shower. His wild leap says otherwise.
