Elderly couple smiling on a wooden bench by a beach boardwalk with an orange cat lying in front of them 31 / 33

Harold and Bev Rested on the Boardwalk. Toffee Rested Even Harder.

The sea air is fresh, the boards are warm and Harold and Bev have found a bench with a view. They sit side by side in their cream sweaters, smiling toward the horizon, while a pale sky glows behind a wooden railing. Stretched out along the planks in front of them, Toffee has claimed the best spot of all, with his big paws crossed and his round, golden eyes aimed straight at us. His orange coat looks almost like part of the sunset. Gulls and distant waves seem to fade into the background as the three of them settle in for a long, quiet afternoon.

Seaside walks are lovely, but cats need extra care outdoors. Use a secure harness and leash designed for cats, since a startled cat can slip out of a collar or bolt away from a loud noise. Hot boards and sand can burn paws, and salt water, fishing hooks and discarded food can be hazards. Bring fresh water and shade, especially for flat-faced breeds like the Exotic Shorthair, which can have a harder time in heat. Many cats are happiest in familiar surroundings, so a short, calm visit is better than a long outing. Talk to your vet about leash training and vaccinations.

Toffee looks completely at ease, as if a beach town were his regular office. Sometimes the best part of a day out is just a sunny bench.
