Odessa Closed Her Eyes on the Porch Swing. Onyx Settled In Right Beside Her.

The porch is quiet and the afternoon is slow. Grandma Odessa leans back in a wooden swing with her eyes closed, a gray cardigan around her shoulders and a green blanket tucked across her lap. Lying in front of her, Onyx has stretched out beside the blanket, his chin resting low and his ears relaxed, the pair of them breathing in time. A pot of succulents and a hanging basket sit behind them, and a bit of sunshine slips across the wooden rail. Not a single sound disturbs them.

Napping cats do something helpful for people: they remind us to rest. Cats typically sleep for much of the day, and a calm, familiar person nearby is one of the best places to do it. A porch swing or chair can be a lovely spot, as long as your cat can step down on his own. Devon Rex cats have fine coats and tend to chase warm places, so a blanket is a nice way to share the comfort. Keep an eye on the weather, though, because a cat that sleeps outdoors can get chilled or sunburned on ears and noses. Bring your cat inside when the evening cools.

Odessa and Onyx have no plans and no deadlines. It is the best kind of afternoon. Even the chains of the swing seem to be taking a break.
