Odessa Was Sewing the Last Patch. Onyx Chose It as His Pillow.
The quilt top is spread across the table in squares of orange, blue, brown and cream, and Grandma Odessa is stitching a corner by hand, her head bowed and her gray cardigan soft against the fabric. Right in the middle of the pattern, Onyx has curled up for a nap, his glossy black fur a dark patch among the bright ones. A thimble, a pincushion and a half-finished corner sit beside him, and the warm room behind is full of shelves, plants and cozy blankets. The room hums with the calm of a patient afternoon.
Cats love fabric piles because they are warm, soft and smell like their people. A sewing room is a wonderful place for a nap, but it comes with a few real hazards. Needles, pins and loose thread can seriously hurt a cat, and string is especially dangerous if swallowed. Put needles and pins in a closed container, pick up scraps when you finish and keep thread spools out of reach. Devon Rex cats like to be near their favorite humans, so a cat bed placed next to the sewing chair gives him a safe spot to nap. If you suspect your cat swallowed thread or a needle, call your vet right away.
Odessa keeps stitching around her helper. In a quilt full of patches, he is the softest one.
