Grandpa Shoveled the Driveway. The Dog Chose the Snowbank

Biscuit has found the best spot on the whole driveway, right in the middle of the fresh drift, and she is not moving. Flakes cling to her whiskers and the fur around her nose, and her mouth hangs open in what can only be called a grin. Behind her, Gus works the shovel in a wool cap and his usual overalls, scraping a clean stripe down the pavement while the garage door and a small evergreen wait for their turn.

Many golden Retrievers adore cold weather. Their thick double coat, with a soft undercoat beneath the longer outer fur, helps them stay comfortable when it is chilly. Still, snow play comes with a few sensible rules. Ice and snow can ball up between the toes, so a quick wipe of the paws afterward is a good habit, and road salt or de-icing products can irritate paws and make a dog sick if licked, so rinse them off. Short play sessions are better than long ones, and any dog that starts shivering or lifting its feet should go inside to warm up. Older dogs may need shorter outings, and your vet can advise on what is right for yours.

Shoveling is slow work when a helper insists on flopping into the very pile you are about to move. Gus does not seem to mind at all. A clear driveway can wait a little longer when there is a happy, snowy dog to look at.
