Grandpa Took His Coffee Outside. The Dog Took Her Usual Spot
Mist hangs over the yard and the sun is just beginning to stir. Gus sits on the weathered porch steps with a big brown mug at his lips, one hand resting on Biscuit's shoulder. She sits close with her head turned toward him, mouth slightly open, her pale gold coat catching the early light. Geraniums bloom in a pot on the porch and a coiled hose hangs on the post behind them.
A morning routine with a dog is a wonderful way to start the day, and dogs thrive on regular habits like set times for meals, walks, and rest. If you enjoy a hot drink while your dog sits nearby, it is worth keeping it safe: coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks are toxic to dogs, and so are many sweeteners, so keep mugs out of nose reach. Hot liquids can also cause painful burns if spilled. A morning walk, even a short one, helps a golden Retriever burn off energy and gives you a gentle start as well. If your dog gets into something it should not, call your vet right away.
For now the walk can wait, and so can the day. Gus has his coffee, Biscuit has her spot beside him, and the yard is slowly turning gold. Some mornings need nothing more than warm hands, a quiet step, and a loyal friend to share it with.
