Grandpa Fell Asleep in the Hammock. The Dog Kept Watch Below
Between two old oak trunks, a wide rope hammock cradles Gus like a hand. He lies back in a plaid shirt and overalls with his eyes closed and his head tilted, entirely at ease. On the grass beside him, Biscuit sleeps with her chin on her paws, ears flopped, right where the hammock sways above her. Late sun slips through the leaves and a blue watering can sits on the lawn near the house.
A hammock nap is one of summer's best simple pleasures, and a dog sleeping underneath it is a faithful companion. Dogs often choose a shady spot near their person and settle in for long, deep rests. In warm weather, make sure your dog has shade and fresh water, and avoid hot pavement and heavy exercise in the heat of the day. Golden Retrievers have a thick coat and can overheat, so signs like heavy panting, drooling, or weakness need prompt attention, and your vet can give advice about hot-weather care. Also make sure the hammock is securely hung and low enough to be safe for an older person to climb in and out of.
The leaves sway and so does the hammock. Neither sleeper is going anywhere, and the yard seems to be holding its breath so they can finish their rest. Whatever is waiting inside the house can stay waiting for a little while longer, and nobody will complain.
