Grandpa Was Teaching a New Trick. Pepper Offered His Paw
Walt kneels on a patterned rug with a plaid shirt, overalls, and a patient smile, and he is gently holding Pepper's raised paw. Pepper sits tall in front of him with his head tilted and his ears perked, a leather collar around his neck. The living room around them is full of everyday charm, with a brown couch, soft blankets, a table with a mug, and a basket of toys and slippers on the floor. A lamp casts a warm yellow light.
Teaching a dog to shake paws is an easy trick to start, and Miniature Schnauzers are clever learners who often pick up new cues quickly. Start with short sessions in a calm room, ask for a sit, and gently lift a paw while saying the cue, then reward with a treat and praise. Keep treats small so the training does not add too many calories, and end each session while your dog is still enjoying himself. Schnauzers can be stubborn, so patience and consistency go a long way. If your dog does not like having his paws handled, go slowly and talk to your vet or a trainer. Paw handling also helps with nail trims later.
Pepper may need a few more rounds, but his focus is sharp. Walt's patience looks endless, and one day soon a handshake will be as easy as a sit.
